Support Your Local Work

Will Vann

In the movie, Support Your Local Sheriff, a wild old west town gets tamed by an out-of-towner who becomes the sheriff, and then starts cleaning up the town. Everything is going well and the citizenry love what the newly appointed sheriff is doing until the “bad guy” family in town besieges it, then the sheriff's support vanishes overnight, and he is left standing alone to face insurmountable odds.

Even though this movie is not an overly serious one, the plot is one that occurs throughout churches all over. It may be the preacher, an elder, a Bible class teacher, or any member who desires to support a particular work. Things can start out well with the project running smoothly and participation high, but when things start getting rough the Indians disappear and the chief is left standing.

Be it is a Gospel meeting, door knocking, VBS, or anything else, whether we necessarily like it or not, we ought to give our support to the work of the local church. “I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’” (Acts 20:35). We have a Gospel meeting coming up, the Hispanic ministry, and other things coming up to which we can lend our support. Let us remember that as Christians our job is not merely to take up space on a pew, but to work until this life is over.
