King of My Life

Will Vann

We sometimes sing the song Lead Me to Calvary right before the Lord’s supper. The first line in this song is, “King of my life, I crown Thee now.” When we sing songs in worship, do we really stop and think about the words that are coming out of our mouths and what they imply?

In First Samuel 8, the Israelites officially reject God for an earthly king. God tells Samuel in verse seven, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.”

Many times throughout our lives, we put things between us and God. It does not necessarily have to be a governing official, or the government as a whole; it could be a job, a position, or a family member. Christ makes it perfectly clear what He expects of us in Luke 14:26 when He says “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.”

There should be nothing that gets in the way of our relationship with our Lord and Master. We ought to truly be able to sing out these words the next time the song is lead, “King of my life, I crown Thee now, Thine shall the glory be.”
