I Can't See!

Will Vann

While watching the Sugar Bowl Friday night, I could not help but to notice the verses that Tim Tebow had written in the eye black under his eyes. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Eph. 2:8-10).

According to Paul Lukas of ESPN.com, the earliest known instance of a player wearing eye black is Washington Redskins fullback Andy Farkas, who apparently came up with the idea on his own in 1942. A 2003 study by Brian DeBroff and Patricia Pahk tested whether black eye grease actually had anti-glare properties. The study concluded that eye black reduced the glare of the sun and improved contrast sensitivity.

It seems somewhat ironic to me that in trying to not only help himself but help others to see better, Mr. Tebow might actually be blinding them. I say this because of his verse selection. No matter how true this verse is, taken out of context it can lead many to be blinded to the whole truth. Yes, we are saved by grace and salvation is a free gift from God, but like any gift, people must reach out and take it before it is truly theirs. There is nothing wrong with professing one’s faith or displaying any Scripture so that others might see it and come to the knowledge of the truth. I think that we should all learn from Mr. Tebow and be more vocal in proclaiming God’s word, but when we do so, let us make sure that we proclaim His whole truth.
