Primary Debacle
A Sad Microcosm of Our Society

Brian R. Kenyon

Anyone who has even slightly followed the local news lately knows that one of our major political parties has created quite a mess with the way they have chosen to count (or not count) their delegates in the presidential primary. Perhaps only the courts can determine which one overrides the other: Florida’s change of voting date or the political party’s national chairman’s decision not to count the delegates. Either way, the party that once insisted that every vote should count has ruined Florida’s delegates—re-vote or not!

This debacle, in many ways, is a smaller version of our society as a whole, political and spiritual. First, consider the political similarity. When people do not want to comply with the rules, they simply change them to fit what they think is best. However, as we see with the primary debacle, the change often comes back to bite! The political party apparently did not think the race would be so close that Florida’s delegates would actually need to be counted. Florida apparently did not think the race would be so close this far into it that had they voted on their normal day (before they changed it), they may have really had a say in who the winner would be. Now, it’s a lose/lose situation for both sides!

Second, and much more significant, consider the spiritual similarity. Unlike civil law or political party rules, true spiritual law is from God (2 Tim. 3:16-17). He is our creator and knows us best (Gen. 1:26-27). Thus, His word gives us everything that pertains to “life and godliness” (2 Pet. 1:3). God’s word cannot be changed (Deut. 4:2; 12:32; Pr. 30:6; Rev. 22:18-19). Any addition or subtraction to His word results in a different Gospel, which is completely powerless to save (Gal. 1:6-9). Yet, when people do not want to comply with it, they try to change it, whether it be to justify unscriptural divorce and remarriage, instrumental music, or some other practice not authorized! Consider the denominational world! Are not these “churches” the result of changing the rules?

Changing God’s law will come back to bite! Jesus said, “Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven” (Mt. 7:21).
