“WWJD”: Not the Most Accurate Slogan

Brian Kenyon

The popular slogan, "What would Jesus do?," fails to acknowledge a very important fact: Jesus lived and died under the Law of Moses (Gal. 4:4). Thus, there are many things Jesus would not do that are not morally wrong for us. For example, Jesus would not eat a grilled pork chop because pork was unclean under the Law (Lev. 11:4-7), but we can eat one (1 Tim. 4:3-4). Also, Jesus would not marry because it was not God's will for Him to have a wife (cf. Jn. 4:34; 5:30), but we are free to marry those whom the Lord deems eligible (Heb. 13:4)! The more accurate slogan would be, "What would Jesus approve?" There are many things Jesus approves that He would not have done. May we always live and abide by that rule (Col. 3:17).
